Biblical Answers Despite Troubling Times – May 2020 Update

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Blessings and greetings to each of you from North Texas. As we look around us at the many troubling circumstances, the political chaos, The Covid-19 Pandemic, Quarantine, Business Shutdown, diseases and deaths. We have to say we are living in troubling and distressing days. The effect on the churches is unique in my lifetime. The long term results in the economy, the political leadership, and in Christians and Churches of America and other nations remains to be seen at this time.

Some might be saying what can we do. As always, the Bible has the answer. Paul expresses, Heb 12:1-2  “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” We are not responsible for the answers, Thank the Lord.

We are responsible for the running of our race, the keeping of our testimony, the faithfulness to our calling, the faithful serving of the Lord responsibly through His Church, the preaching and teaching of the Gospel message where we are and when we can. In Paul’s letters he has a routine of first, Declaring Doctrine. Then he Describes Duty of Christians; the Action of Obedience to our instruction. The Scripture is given for our understanding. The old song says our happiness is found when we “Trust and Obey”. The old quote is; “Ours is not to question why, Ours is just to do or die.” And my old fashioned Mother’s version was something like this, “young man I think you’ll have your hands full if you do just that”. 1Co 4:2  “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.”

Since mid-March we have had five meetings cancelled. Susie and I have been at home quarantine. Most churches have followed the Pandemic instructions for social-distancing procedures. Right now most of them are in the process of reopening and easing into assembly routines. God has blessed us all even in this time of lost jobs, economic as well as social disruption and death. In the midst of it all His grace is still extended. Technology has allowed many to hear preaching that may have not heard before. God’s people have been given a means of staying in touch. Susie and I have heard a lot of preaching that we otherwise wouldn’t have. But there’s no substitute for assembly and I am more thankful for it than ever before. Pray for pastors and congregations as they make the decisions that must be made about these things.
